🗓️ A universal canvas for time

See where you’re going —
and how you got here

Lay work and life out on a timeline and the whole picture clicks: what’s coming next, what’s running long, and — looking back — exactly how things unfolded.

100% free — every feature, no paid plans, no limits

Who it’s for

Made for anyone who plans over time

If it has dates, it fits on a timeline. A few of the people who get the most out of Timelines:

📊

Managers & teams

Lay out initiatives and roadmaps, track deadlines, and see what’s overdue across every workstream. Share a swimlane and keep the team on the same page.

📣

Content creators & SMM

Plan editorial calendars and campaigns. Lay content pipelines out as bars and drop posts onto the exact days they go live.

🧠

PKM & note-takers

Give your notes a time dimension. Capture thoughts in the Inbox, place them on dates, and keep a Markdown outline of everything you track.

✍️

Writers & screenwriters

Chart story arcs, chapter beats and character timelines side by side. Keep plot threads on separate lanes and watch how they intersect in time.

🎓

Educators & course creators

Plan curricula, lesson schedules and cohort timelines. Lay a course out week by week and keep every module, assignment and deadline in view.

🧭

Personal life

Health, events, travel, goals — anything with a date. Keep the big picture of your year on one zoomable canvas.

The model

Four levels, one clear structure

Everything you create nests into a simple hierarchy — so a board can hold anything from a personal year to a multi-team roadmap without getting messy.

Level 1

Boards

Top-level timelines like Work, Personal or Archive. Switch between them as tabs and reorder by dragging.

Level 2

Swimlanes

Horizontal rows inside a board — one per team, workstream or theme. Collapsible, colorable, and shareable on their own.

Level 3

Bars & Events

Bars span a date range (open-ended too); events (points) mark a single moment. Both stack freely within a lane.

Level 4

Segments & Markers

Break a bar into phases with segments, and pin milestones on it with markers — each with its own color and notes.

The canvas

A timeline you can zoom, pan and navigate

The heart of the app is a live canvas where time flows left to right. Zoom from a single month out to five years, scrub across dates, and always find your place.

  • Zoom levels from 1 month to 5 years, plus wheel-zoom anchored at the cursor
  • Pan with the middle mouse button or a horizontal trackpad swipe
  • “Center on today” jumps the view back to the current date
  • Date grid, weekend bands, a live current-date line and a hover-date readout
  • Click empty space to create a bar or event pre-filled with that date

Building blocks

Bars, segments, markers and events

Compose a timeline from a small, consistent set of pieces. Every item carries a title, a rich description and a color from the standard 10-color palette.

  • Bars — a titled span between two dates, or open-ended into the future
  • Segments — sub-spans inside a bar for phases or stages
  • Markers — milestones pinned to an exact moment on a bar
  • Events — standalone points on a swimlane at a single date
  • Resize bars and segments right on the canvas by dragging their edges

Tasks & deadlines

Turn any event into a checkable task

Mark an event or marker as a task and it becomes a checkbox you can resolve. The timeline keeps an eye on what’s slipping so nothing quietly falls behind.

  • Two kinds of items: standard pins and resolvable tasks
  • Tick a task off directly on the canvas or in the outline
  • Overdue, unresolved tasks get an unmissable highlight
  • A dedicated Resolver role can tick tasks without editing anything else

Organize by dragging

Rearrange everything with drag & drop

Structure is never locked in. Grab anything and move it — the layout follows your hand, and the new order is saved for you.

  • Reorder boards, swimlanes, bars and events by dragging
  • Drag a swimlane onto another board’s tab to move it there
  • Drag a bar’s or segment’s edge to resize its date range
  • Stack items vertically within a lane in the order you want

Inbox

Capture a thought now, place it later

The Inbox is one always-there buffer for undated notes — the single place where something doesn’t need a date, a lane or a type yet. Jot it down in a second, then sort it out when you’re ready.

  • Press n anywhere to jump to quick capture — type, hit Enter, keep going
  • Notes are plain Markdown; the first line becomes the title
  • A live badge always shows how many notes are still unsorted
  • Drag a note onto the canvas to turn it into an event — or drop it inside a bar for a marker
  • Nothing has to become something: edit or delete notes freely

At-a-glance status

See what’s overdue and what’s next — per board

Every board tab carries a small badge: overdue tasks in red, upcoming events for your horizon. You can tell where attention is needed without opening a single board.

  • Red numerator — overdue, unresolved tasks (past the current moment)
  • Denominator — events due within your horizon: 1 week, 2 weeks or 1 month
  • Counts every date: a bar’s start and end, segments, markers and events
  • Tallied across all your boards at once, the Shared board included
  • Hidden items are left out; the badge disappears when everything’s clear

Outline view

The same content, as a text outline

Prefer words to a canvas? Flip to the outline view for a hierarchical, document-like take on your swimlane — with a table of contents and everything editable in place.

  • Browse a board → swimlane tree on the left, content on the right
  • Edit titles and dates inline, without opening a form
  • Jump around with an auto-generated table of contents
  • Descriptions render as Markdown; links open in a new tab

Sharing & collaboration

Share a swimlane, control who does what

Invite people to a single swimlane by email and pick exactly how much they can do. Shared lanes show up on a dedicated board for everyone they’re shared with.

Share panel — invite by email, pick a role, and manage grantees with Active/Pending status

Roles that map to real needs

Each person gets one of four roles. Owners run the lane; the rest see a view tailored to what they’re allowed to change.

  • Invite by email — invitations show as Pending until accepted, then Active
  • Change a role or revoke access at any time
  • Edits sync with automatic merging, so simultaneous changes don’t clobber each other
